WFH has been particularly challenging for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-02183-x\" aria-label=\"female\">female<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-00807-4\" aria-label=\"early career researchers\">early career researchers<\/a> as well as graduate students who have returned to homes in the Global South. During WFH, laboratory and field research tasks are obviously put on the back burner, and researchers devote time to catching up on the literature, data analysis, and writing. There\u2019s a lot that publishers and societies can do to make peer-reviewed content easily accessible for a WFH audience.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quick-to-process formats that allow multitasking<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Younger researchers, particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/women-in-science-may-suffer-lasting-career-damage-from-covid-19\/\" aria-label=\"women\">women<\/a>, are more likely to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-01135-9\" aria-label=\"juggling childcare\">juggling childcare<\/a> and work, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-01294-9\" aria-label=\"lower productivity\">lower productivity<\/a>. Here\u2019s where captions come in handy; in fact, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tjmccue\/2019\/07\/31\/verizon-media-says-69-percent-of-consumers-watching-video-with-sound-off\/?sh=35bc337935d8\" aria-label=\"study by Verizon Media and Publicis Media\">study by Verizon Media and Publicis Media<\/a> found that <span><em><strong>80% of viewers in the US are more likely to watch an entire video when it has captions.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Formats suitable for any kind of Internet connection<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Researchers living in the Global South or even rural areas of the US often lack fast and stable Internet connections. They have difficulty accessing content like HD videos or livestreamed webinars. In fact, YouTube, Amazon, and Netflix announced in 2020 that they would <a href=\"https:\/\/skndrysn.com\/2020\/03\/20\/amazon-netflix-and-youtube-will-reduce-streaming-quality-to-lessen-broadband-strain\/\" aria-label=\"reduce streaming quality worldwide\">reduce streaming quality worldwide<\/a>, to lessen broadband strain. Organizers of conferences with livestreamed sessions and those publishing video summaries of research would do well to follow suit, by providing low-resolution options for video downloads.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Despite the many drawbacks of WFH, researchers are likely to prefer <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0249127\" aria-label=\"WFH or a hybrid home-office model\">WFH or a hybrid home-office model<\/a> in the future, even after lockdowns end.
