Cactus Communications (CACTUS), a leading technology company specializing in AI and expert solutions for the scholarly publishing ecosystem, has announced its partnership with the American Physical Society (APS) to automate technical checks in APS’ editorial workflow using Paperpal Preflight for Editorial Desk, an AI-powered submission readiness tool developed by CACTUS.

Manual technical checks have traditionally been time-consuming and resource-intensive for publishers. As the submission volumes continue to rise, editorial teams face growing pressure to process manuscripts quickly while maintaining the highest standards of quality and research integrity. Through this collaboration, APS will integrate Paperpal Preflight into its editorial workflow to streamline its technical evaluation process, reduce manual effort, and improve the overall speed and accuracy of editorial decision-making.

Nikesh Gosalia, Chief Partnership Officer, Cactus Communications, said, “The volume of submissions has grown exponentially over the last few years, overwhelming editorial teams with unsustainable workloads. Paperpal Preflight for Editorial Desk is designed to address these challenges by automating technical checks and reducing manual effort. Through our partnership with APS, we aim to help streamline editorial workflows, enhance operational efficiency, and uphold the highest standards of research integrity.”

Beth Craanen, Director of Editorial Operations, American Physical Society added, “Through our collaboration with Cactus Communications, we’re making it easier for authors to meet submission standards without the frustration of multiple rounds of checks. The integration of CACTUS’ tool empowers researchers with real-time guidance, helping them prepare complete, compliant manuscripts and cutting down on time spent resolving formatting or requirement issues. This partnership highlights how AI can support high-quality scholarly publishing and improve the overall experience for researchers.”

Paperpal Preflight for Editorial Desk leverages advanced AI to automate manuscript screening, ensuring each submission meets journal-specific technical and ethical requirements before reaching the editorial review stage. Partnerships such as these are essential for providing publishers, journals and societies with the tools needed to uphold the integrity of scientific research.
